For seniors, falls continue to be the top reason for ER visits. In our nation, a senior adult is treated for a fall-related injury every 13 seconds. Other frequent reasons for calling an ambulance are complications from medical disorders.
Other frequent reasons elders visit the emergency room include pneumonia, drug side effects, back discomfort, and post-operative problems.
The good news is that those who look after elderly family members may be able to avoid many trips to the emergency room of a hospital.
According to recent congressional research, seniors who received better care may have saved up to 25% of hospital admissions.
Having health conditions regularly monitored or making sure older adults take their medications as prescribed and on schedule were two critical preventative measures that were identified.
The physical infrastructure of assisted living facilities is intended to help manage falls. Walk-in showers, grab bars in the bathroom, and handrails in the halls are also commonplace. While no senior living facility can ensure that a senior won't fall, on-site health programs and exercise sessions can help seniors reduce their risk. Stronger and more stable older people can lower their likelihood of visiting the emergency room of a hospital.
Providing round-the-clock care for an elderly loved one who lives alone can be challenging. In a facility for assisted living, assistance is always available for personal care, toilet trips, housework, laundry, and transportation.
Seniors who live alone are less likely to make the time to prepare nutritious meals. Poor nutrition may affect several things, including how quickly a wound heals and how likely it is for an older person to fall.
The New York Times reports that if an alternate source of treatment is easily accessible, more than half of emergency department visits don't need hospital-based care. Assisted living facilities could be the answer.
