Who Are the Carers in Our Country?

The term "carer" carries a lot of meanings. When we hear the phrase, we could picture a small child's parent or guardian.

Let's appreciate our caregivers

The term "carer" carries a lot of meanings. When we hear the phrase, we could picture a small child's parent or guardian. a person taking care of an elderly parent. a senior caring for their partner. Or perhaps a hired carer, a home health aide, or a nanny.

All of these responses are accurate.

But who exactly are carers? What are their worries and difficulties? How can we best assist them, then?

A look at the carers in our country

The National Carers Alliance and the AARP conducted a poll called "Caregiving in the U.S." that sheds light on the demographics, responsibilities, and difficulties of carers.

You might be surprised by the figures on who actually provides care in our country.

  • The "average" carer is a woman, age 49, who is looking after an elderly relative.
  • Men make up just 40% of carers.
  • Between the ages of 18 and 34, carers make up around 25% of the workforce.
  • A "higher hour" carer is one who provides care for an average of 24.4 hours per week.
  • 41 hours of care are given each week by 23% of carers.

Financial difficulties faced by carers:

A caregiver's household makes just $47,500 on average. This leaves little money in the budget for paid caring time off or to engage outside support for services like delivered meals, transportation, in-home health care, or respite care.

Emotional difficulties:

In addition to the financial burden of caring, 46% of carers who offer more than 21 hours of unpaid care each week say their responsibilities cause mental stress.

Many people also don't believe that an end is imminent. The majority have been providing care for their loved one for an average of 4.5 years and anticipate doing so for at least five more.

Consider respite care as a possible option for carers who are at risk of burnout in order to take a break for a week or two. Or take into account enrolling in adult day programs, even if just a few hours a week.

Nursing care for family members:

Six in ten higher-hour carers say they provide medical or nursing care without any training or instruction, and 20 percent of them feel it is challenging.
