Medicaid eligibility norms and criteria
To be eligible for Medicaid assistance in North Carolina, a person's income cannot be higher than $1,355 for assisted living and $1,717 for memory care per month. In terms of resources, there are cash, savings accounts, retirement funds, stocks, bonds, the cash value of life insurance policies, and other kinds of investments. For those who only rely on Social Security, these numbers are usually manageable, but for many, additional income from pensions and other sources can quickly push their monthly income totals above the limits.
Minimum residency
The resident must not own any property or assets before the resident is eligible for Medicaid. However, it's important to be prepared because medical emergencies cannot be predicted. So the Medicaid facility is available for seniors' care when they don't have any other way out. There are also eligibility requirements to take into account. People who move to North Carolina to senior living, for example, must either have lived here for at least six months or have established a permanent residence for at least 60 days for Medicaid assistance.
Look-Back period
The state of North Carolina will start what is known as a 60-month Medicaid Look-Back period when you apply for Medicaid. This implies that the state will go through every asset transfer you made over the previous five years to make sure that nothing was given away or sold for less than its fair market value. If the state determines that the look-back rule has been violated, the look-back rule is deemed to have been violated to meet the asset requirement for Medicaid.
